I plugged my 4TB My Passport USB drive into my new Synology NAS DS1817. I expected the device to import my files using USB Copy. But I kept getting an error that there were "no external storage device is mounted". I looked at the control panel's external devices, showing the USB drive as "File system type: <Not Supported>". Now Synology NAS DS1817 supports Btrfs, ext3, ext4, FAT, FAT32, exFAT, HFS, HFS Plus, and NTFS. And my USB drive was NTFS. Well, later I figured out that Windows 8/10 has a setting called "fast startup" which makes the drive unrecognizable by Linux drivers. There are two ways to disable this:
1. Plug your drive back into a Win 8/10 computer, then hold down the "shift" key while clicking shutdown on your computer. Once the computer has shutdown, plug the USB drive back into the NAS.
2. Window+R key, type "powercfg.cpl"
Then select "choose what the power buttons do" on the left hand side.
Next uncheck "turn on fast startup". If it is greyed out then select the "change settings that are currently unavailable" located at the top.
